THE IDEA: In early October 2004, a ride to the golf course and the sighting of an old school bus on the side of hwy 441 spawns a discussion about the greatest tailgating machine UGA has ever seen. THE EXPLORATION: After the game of golf, a quick tour of the bus led to a phone call with the bus owner and an offer made to buy what looked like a pile of potential and not much more. THE PURCHASE: On a sunny Thursday morning, the bus became ours! We now had 2 weeks to get it ready for the long, long road to Jacksonville! THE MAN HOURS: Over 300 man hours went into cleaning, painting, remodeling, and overhauling the 72ft monster. Many good people helped erect the DAWG Bus from the green monster. I will attempt to give them credit: James Bauer, Tim Price, Barbara Youngs, Pete Youngs, Alan Youngs, P.J. Zonsius, Paul Caurtwright, Andy Millisor, Greg Gaughn, Bart Small, Chris Zonsius, Lindsey Gardner, Whitney Seay, Nick Holman and Adam Melvin. ACCOMPLISHED: We entirely repainted the sides red, the roof white, and the bottom windows black. The interior, which had been covered with 15 yr old gum, sparkled from elbow grease and a new black paint job. The list goes on: storage rack, stereo, speakers, countertop, futons, etc. THE FIRST TRIIP: The maiden voyage to the Georgia vs. Florida game took 13hrs from Athens to Jacksonville, and the return required an overnight stay. The trip exceeded all expectations of fun, excitement and publicity! ONGONG: The DAWG Bus now goes to all the games and on non-game days the DAWG bus can be found around Athens doing special promotions for our sponsors, and attending other special events around the southeast. |
